Nvidia confirmed it is buying Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, and TechCrunch says the deal finally ends weeks of rumor. Hugging Face hosts about three million models, half a million datasets, and a million apps used by more than 18 million developers. That is the public square for open-weight AI, and the biggest chip company just bought the square.

CEO Jensen Huang says Hugging Face will stay open and compute-agnostic. Developers keep picking their models, frameworks, clouds, and chips. Nvidia compute will not be required to build or deploy on the platform. Huang also notes Nvidia has already put more than 500 models and 250 open datasets on Hugging Face, and he keeps arguing open models matter for cybersecurity and for keeping AI from locking into a few closed APIs.

Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue said the community proved open source can rival closed APIs, but scaling needs more compute, support, and visibility. That is why they went to Jensen. The company raised over $395 million to date, with its last big round in 2023\. The Verge notes the last official valuation was $4.5 billion, and Hugging Face previously turned down a $500 million Nvidia investment that would have valued it at $7 billion. The Information has put recent annualized revenue around $150 million, so this price is mostly strategic.

Why it matters for regular builders: Hugging Face is where a lot of us grab models, datasets, and Spaces. If Nvidia keeps the neutrality promise, more infrastructure behind the same open front door is a win. If the platform slowly tilts toward Nvidia-only paths, choice shrinks. Huang is pitching the first story hard because closed labs are also building their own chips and ecosystems.

TechCrunch also ties the deal to Nvidia's broader open-model spend. The company has poured tens of billions into frontier labs and recently struck a large deal with coding startup Poolside for open models. Hugging Face gives Nvidia the distribution layer those models need, plus a place to sell spare cloud capacity packaged with developer tooling.

Delangue has said the platform was getting close to profitability on its growth rate. That matters less to Nvidia than owning the front door where millions of builders start. The emoji joke in the $12,930,300,000 price tag is cute. The serious test is whether Hugging Face still feels like a neutral hub when the owner also sells the GPUs under most of the models.

I want the open library to stay boringly open. Watch the next few months for whether non-Nvidia models, datasets, and inference providers still feel first-class on the site. For day-to-day work, keep using Hugging Face the way you do now, and treat the acquisition as a bet that open weights stay central to how AI actually ships.
